Zambia must strengthen insurance education to help individuals and businesses move from reacting to financial losses toward planning for and managing risk.
Too often, people only understand their financial exposure after facing increased loan costs, penalties, repossession, bailiff action, legal claims, property loss, or business interruption. Insurance knowledge can help change this reality.
With better insurance awareness:
• Banks can assess and price secured lending risks more responsibly.
• Money lenders can use credit-life, collateral, and business-interruption insurance to manage genuine risks—not depend entirely on high interest rates and penalties.
• Borrowers can understand loan defaults, repossession procedures, bailiff costs, and their legal obligations.
• Individuals can protect themselves against health, motor, property, travel, and personal-liability risks.
• Companies can manage professional liability, employee injuries, cybercrime, fire, theft, marine cargo, and operational disruption.
• Financial institutions can reduce bad debts caused by unexpected and uninsured losses.
However, insurance must never be used to conceal unfair charges or replace responsible financial regulation. Interest rates, premiums, commissions, exclusions, penalties, and claims procedures must remain transparent.
Zambia needs a coordinated national framework combining financial education, insurance literacy, responsible lending, consumer protection, and legal accountability.
The goal is simple: move from recovering losses after a crisis to identifying, pricing, transferring, and managing risks before they become financial disasters.
Insurance knowledge is not merely about buying a policy—it is about protecting income, assets, businesses, families, and Zambia’s wider financial system.
